These are the only required foods that must be eaten to complete a Passover.
There may be other foods and drinks in addition to these, but the others are not required according to Exodus 12.
The only food forbidden throughout Passover is yeast as in the leavening agent for breads.
What are the bitter herbs?
Horseradish was cultivated by the ancient Egyptians prior to 1500 BC and was probably the most common bitter herb found among the Hebrew slaves as it prolifically grew as a weed unless cultivated for sale. The intact horseradish root has hardly any aroma. When cut or grated, however, enzymes from the now-broken plant cells break down and produce an oil which irritates the mucous membranes of the sinuses and eyes. Grated mash should be used immediately or preserved in vinegar for best flavor. Once exposed to air or heat it will begin to lose its pungency, darken in color, and become unpleasantly bitter tasting over time. It has many good qualities for flavoring food and has been used medicinally for thousands of years. Certainly it was in every household for these reasons.
A bowl of raw horseradish on the table does not look threatening or put out a pungent odor. If sliced like the illustration in the photograph above it looks like a clean white disk about the size of a quarter or half dollar. If you take a bite off the side of the piece it will have no flavor or reaction at all for about three to five seconds. In fact, many then say, “that’s not so bad”. But then a sudden very sharp rush to the nasal cavity will occur. Many times this is overwhelming if not expected or too large a bite is taken. Then it will just taste bitter.
This is an excellent example of sin and the results of sin. Most of the time sin doesn’t look harmful at all and may be quite pleasant for a while. Then comes the “bite” and most will say “what have I done, my life is so bitter and hopeless”. This is the way it worked in the Garden of Eden.
Genesis 3 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
Look at the bitter penalty of sin.
Genesis 3:13- And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Genesis started with man
in a garden.
Genesis ended with man in a coffin in Egypt.
Genesis 2:8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. The Hebrew words for garden of Eden are Gan Eden which means Garden of Pleasure.

They disobeyed God and took fruit from a tree God had told them not to eat from. They hurt themselves.
Some have said “If I set a bowl of fruit on the table and tell my children not to eat from this bowl, I leave the room and when I return I see they have eaten. Do you think I would put my children in an oven for this? What kind of God do you have?”
When this question is slightly changed a clearer understanding of what happened is seen. Suppose the mother was boiling water on the stove to make spaghetti and she said, as she had many times before; don’t touch that, it will hurt you. God said don’t eat that you will die. This scenario can be said in thousands of ways, but the outcome always leaves us with this. We are given choices. Everyone must make the right choices. Would you like to live where you could never make a choice?
Now you have another choice.
Will you be set free from sin and the penalty of sin by choosing to believe what the New Testament says about Jesus The Messiah?
Several years ago at a Passover Seder in Georgia a young boy kept looking at the one conducting the Seder. The boy chose to do just the opposite of everything that was said. The speaker held up the hard boiled egg and said “be careful not to break the shell until I tell you to.” The boy held up his egg and dropped it. During the service the speaker said “we wont eat the Matzo yet”. The boy picked his up and broke it in half and started eating. The speaker said “take a very small bite of the bitter herbs”. The boy looked at his and threw the large piece into his mouth and started chewing. There is not space enough to finish this story here. Needless to say, it is not good to take a large bite of raw horseradish.
When the church gathers for communion , before we partake of the small items of the bread, and drink the small cup of the fruit of the vine, we examine ourselves. If we do these small examinations we shouldn’t be served a large bitter chunk of a ruined life. It is becoming common to see one family after another fall into ruin.
Charoset
From Bitterness to Sweet
Charoset is a sweet, thick, dark-colored paste made of fruits and nuts eaten at the Passover Seders throughout the world.
Charoset is not one of the three foods required in the Torah to complete a Passover, however it is a result of freedom. The Charoset is a sweet mixture of nuts, apples, honey and other ingredients depending on the country it is served. The ingredients are usually ground or finely chopped to make a mixture that looks similar to mortar, the substance from which the bricks were made in Egypt The mortar was made from rocks, straw, twigs, dirt, water etc. which produced a pasty brown substance.
The charoset is eaten after the maror (bitter herbs). The sweet taste of charoset is supposed to overtake the bitter taste of maror in both a literal and symbolic sense, symbolically because freedom is represented by the sweet taste of charoset and overtakes slavery, represented by the bitter taste of maror. As the order of the Seder moves from eating the bitter herbs of slavery the next article to be eaten is the charoset, just before the full Passover meal is served. From the curse of slavery, to the sweetness of freedom and then the banquette of a roast lamb dinner was a wonderful change for the Jewish nation. This change has been the overall theme of the Passover in the Jewish community throughout the generations. Every generation looks for this blessed hope.
Charoset is mentioned some 2,000 years ago in the Babylonian Talmud, Pesachim 116 on the rules for the Seder. From there, it is inferred that the ingredients for the charoseth can be found in the Song of Songs which is Solomon’s which is read the first evening of Passover. The spring, sweetness, fruit, fertility of the Song of Songs are all tied together in the tradition of the charoset.
At a traditional Passover meal a pasty mixture of fruit, nuts, and spices called charoset is eaten. The traditional Haggadah says it represents the mortar used while laying bricks in Egypt. Remembering the curse of slavery they say the charoset represents the sweetness of freedom when they were set free at Passover.
Psalm 119:103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

Archaeological excavations in the Delta region, especially those dating to around the time of the Exodus, and specifically in regards to the store city of Pithom and nearby Succoth, show that mud brick with straw was the only standard building material. Bricks formerly having straw within them are very distinctive due to the small holes left with the decay of the organic material. Remains of mud bricks at Tell el Retabeh (Pithom) — dating to the time of the Exodus. Notice holes from where the straw has decayed.
The hard taskmaster
For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills; A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey; A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass. When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee. Deuteronomy 8:7-10
Just as the water of the Red Sea parted and became a wall on the right and the left making the path to freedom clear and straight so was Jesus offered as the way from the curse of Adam’s sin.
Exodus 14:22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Exodus 14:15 And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward: 16 But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. 17 And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. 18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. 19 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: 20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night. 21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

There were only
two problems
with this freedom.
1. Dayenu is never Dayenu
Dayenu is a song that is part of the Jewish holiday of Passover. The word “Dayenu” means approximately “it would have been enough for us”, “it would have been sufficient”, or “it would have sufficed” (yd dai in Hebrew is “enough”, and -enu the first person plural suffix, “to us”). This traditional up-beat Passover song is over one thousand years old.
Dayenu has 15 stanzas representing the 15 gifts God bestowed.. Each of the stanzas is followed by the word “Dayenu” (it would have been enough) sung repeatedly. A few of the stanzas are listed as follows:
If He had brought us out from Egypt, and had not carried out judgments against them Dayenu, it would have sufficed us! Dai, daiyenu, Dai, daiyenu, Daiyenu, Daiyenu
If He had smitten their first-born, and had not given us their wealth Dayenu, it would have sufficed us! Dai, daiyenu, Dai, daiyenu, Daiyenu, Daiyenu
If He had given us their wealth, and had not split the sea for us Dayenu, it would have sufficed us! Dai, daiyenu, Dai, daiyenu, Daiyenu, Daiyenu

Dayenu
The Jewish nation in the Exodus were not satisfied and 3,500 years later enough is still never enough: enough money, enough beauty, enough health, enough time.
Who really needs to be satisfied?
It is God who must be satisfied with us and forgive us of our sin. He said He was satisfied and forgave us when the Messiah presented Himself as the “Lamb of God and took away the sin of the world”.
He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Isaiah 53:11
מעמל נפשׁו יראה ישׂבע בדעתו יצדיק צדיק עבדי לרבים ועונתם הוא יסבל
Two months after leaving Egypt
And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt. And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness: And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger. Exodus 16:1-3
were it not better for us to return into Egypt? And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt. (Note: I am sure if we had been there, God would have wanted to kill us too. It is a good thing for grace!)
Out of the 3,500,000+- Jews and mixed multitude that left Egypt only two made it to the promised land the rest complained for a solid 40 years and died in the wilderness. This takes into account Moses who died as a result of his aggravation to toward the people that he struck the rock and then God told him he would die in the wilderness. Human nature in the 21st century has not changed enough that any of us would make it either. Enough is never enough.
The second problem is –
2. The Earth and Everything on it is Cursed
People who do not read the Bible do not realize there was a curse that followed the sin in the Garden of Eden. This curse is much worse and widespread than the 400 years in Egypt. The whole world has been cursed from top to bottom.
For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
Romans 8:22-23
The curse started shortly after Adam and Eve ate from the “tree of knowledge of good and evil”.

The birthplace of the Messiah
In the Hebrew Scroll of the 12 Prophets, Micah 5:2 starts with Micah 5:1 (5:2 in English Bibles) But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

The birth of Jesus The Messiah was not some clever trick to present Him as the long awaited Messiah.
Birth of The Messiah?
This article is not meant as disrespect to anyone people either love or hate. The simple question here is “what proof does a person have to be proclaimed as the Messiah”? There have been many over the millennia who were thought of as the Messiah. Here, only three are covered.
First -Simon ben Kosiba 132 A.D.
He was Jewish – He hated the Romans – He was proclaimed to be very strong – He amassed a large army against Rome – He was intelligent, charismatic – He was ascribed to be a very religious pious observant Jew. Rabbi Akiva, declared Bar Kosiba as the Messiah. Bar Kosiba was renamed Bar Kochba (son of the star) and was declared the Messiah based on Numbers 24:17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. – He had coinage made with a star above the Temple referring to himself.
Second – Menachem Mendel Schneerson (1902–1994),
He was Jewish – He was born in Nikolaev, Russia – Born into the Chabad Dynasty – He was the seventh generation of Chabad rebbes – Menachem Mendel Schneerson was the seventh and last rebbe of the Lubavitch branch of Hasidic Judaism – Moshiach, (messiah), would appear during the reign of Chabad’s seventh generation, – His followers declared him to be the Messiah. – He was proclaimed to be very generous toward the needy – He was intelligent, charismatic – He was a very religious pious observant Jew. People from Russia, Israel, New York, China proclaimed him to be the Messiah even after his death.
The Hebrew and Russian writing above says: “Welcome our lord and teacher, true king and Messiah for ever and ever”.

In ancient Israel a “manger” was a carved stone used to hold food for animals.
Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. Isaiah 53:1-2

The birth of The Messiah had nothing to do with a man except that the woman was born into the correct tribe of Israel. the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; … Matthew 1:1-18
The birth was strictly between God and the woman as is says in Genesis 3 Her seed bruised the head of the serpent.
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Genesis 3:15

When Jesus presented Himself as The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the Earth, He took the curse upon Himself. He took the thorns upon His head.
And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band. And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him. These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever. And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. Revelation 22:3-6
Death
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Romans 5:12
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23
The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. 1 Corinthians 15:26
For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:53-57
Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. John 11:21-27
